Flat renovations start today!Yes, dear readers, it is true. I have bought a flat, 79 square meters (850 square feet) in downtown Budapest for 80K USD (I know, right?) I bought it with the help of a generous no-interest 5-year housing loan from my employer--thanks, CEU! The previous owners are an elderly couple who owned it for 23 years, and have made minimal repairs to the place. It will come as no surprise that it needs an utter and complete renovation.
The back story, for anyone interested, is that the flat/apartment/condo/whatever is located in the palace quarter of Budapest. It is an amazing, up-and-coming neighborhood that is located behind the National Museum, 20-25 minutes walking distance from Central European University.
I bought a flat that is on the fourth floor of a small four-story Bauhaus building. What is great is that only one of the four walls is shared--the others have no neighbors and, given that it is the top floor, there are no upstairs neighbors either.
Both the exterior and interior is a shambles, and it may take a while before the building itself is renovated--although the process has begun, it probably won't be years before it is actually done.
The interior is what I have to deal with; the rough deadline is September 2013. The original flat has been disastrously sub-divided into a million tiny rooms (9 to be exact!), and
Today begins the demolition of six of those rooms, as indicated in red (spare room, kitchen, hall, pantry, toilet, bathroom) into one large kitchen/dining/living area. A large spare room will be converted into the bathroom, the living room will become the guest room and the bedroom stays the same.
As you can see, a LOT of work lies ahead...
